FAQs – Your questions answered

  • Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic tool and does not cause any pain.

  • Most exams can be performed with the patient awake. Sedation may or may not be advisable or necessary for ultrasound exams depending upon the need for motion control, the patient’s temperament, presence of painful conditions, and other factors. Please obtain consent from the pet owner for sedation.
  • Patients should be fasted for 8 hours prior to the ultrasound exam.
  • A dark, quiet room is requested for the study with an assistant available to hold the animal.
  • The patients haircoat will be clipped for the exam and owners should be made aware of this.
  • Most scans take approximately 30-45 minutes.
  • Many pet owners believe their pet will be less stressed and more cooperative if they are with them but it is often the opposite. It is also important to avoid interruptions and possible distractions to allow the sonographer to fully concentrate on the ultrasound exam. Therefore an ultrasound examination can be performed more efficiently and more accurately when only trained staff is helping with your pet.
  • Written reports with images will be provided directly to the referring vet. If communication with the owner is preferred a consult charge will apply.
